Well they're done. Not exactly as I envisioned them, but not too shabby. High heel, patent leather, yellow pumps with magenta soles.

I thought it might be interesting to see a little more "before" since my illustrations are only posted "after" they're painted. The next painting will be a study of some pretty fabulous high heel pumps. I love looking at shoes like this, but I do not enjoy the wearing of them. Achi wa wa (which basically translates to "ouch"). Anyway, here's the sketch of my next project. Hopefully I'll post the finished product tomorrow.
Today's study is a ring that reminds me of "mood rings" I used to see everyone wearing in the seventies. Simple and kind of groovy. I used to love trying on all of my moms trinkets from her jewelry box. My absolute favorite piece was a magenta, faux velvet choker with a black embroidered butterfly in the front.
Back to the trinket at hand. I think it'll live as a business card template for an antiques dealer or estate jeweler.
So it's been over a week since I've gotten to tackle a "painting of the day" and hence the reason I call the "painting of the day(ish)." I found a photo of very elegant woman in profile, but wasn't really happy with the way she turned out.
I then created a graphic representation instead which is the reason I'm a graphic designer and not a full-time illustrator. I think she works much better as a strong silhouette.
She's perfect as a personal calling card or business card for a boutique.
My painting of the day(ish) was inspired by a classic, pink, princess phone. These used to be all the rage and you can still buy a replica at Crosley Radio. The new-fangled edition has push-button dialing rather than a rotary dial so you can save your nails.
My very first purchase on layaway (remember layaway?—it's making a comeback in these tough economic times) was a vintage-look phone at Radio Shack. Ah, I made my mother crazy with all the hours I spent talking with girlfriends on that phone. I though I was so cool like a modern 1980's Jean Harlow.
Shoes. I've always loved well-designed shoes, but the cost is often prohibitive which is probably a good thing since I have limited closet space. The right shoe can literally make or break an outfit and this is the reason we women often have so darn many pairs of shoes. They are lovely pieces of sculpture in my opinion. This vintage spectator pump is on my latest personal stationery notecard design.
Today's inspiration for the daily(ish) painting is fashion and specifically a lovely bridesmaid dress I recently saw. I'm a big fan of choosing dresses your bridal attendants can use again because these dresses ain't cheap. Daffodil yellow is back and vogue and changed the sash from black to a rich brown. Paired with some chocolate pumps this little number would look smashing with a bouquet of small sunflowers.
If you're looking for a special way to invite a special woman to be your bridesmaid, this illustration can be purchased as a customizable card complete with envelope here.
